The Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) is still operational, despite recent reports that the agency had been quietly disbanded, an administration official told the Daily Caller.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor said at a recent event that DOGE as a “centralized entity” no longer exists, Reuters reported on Sunday. An administration official told the caller that DOGE is still an operational agency that will continue to execute its mission through May 2026.

The DOGE central office continues to have staff assisting the agency’s projects, the administration official added to the caller. (RELATED: Trump Admin’s Latest Addition Wants to Keep DOGE Alive – Here’s How)

Some of these projects include “improving VA appointment management with integrated scheduling, check-ins, notifications, and post-visit support”; “advancing responsible AI across government through partnership with GSA”; “transform the nonimmigrant visa process to support travel to the Olympics and World Cup with a more reliable and adaptable digital platform”; and “supporting 18 million students by modernizing the FAFSA system and implementing major changes to student loans and Pell Grants.”

Reuters initially reported that DOGE no longer existed and OPM had absorbed most of its functions. DOGE account X responded to the report and called it fake. Acting DOGE Administrator Amy Gleason posted additional confirmation on LinkedIn that the central office is open.

In addition to one administration official pushing back on the claim that DOGE had closed its doors, two senior administration officials told the caller that the agency’s work has always been largely managed by different elements of the federal government while still having a central office.

In the months since Tesla CEO Elon Musk left the agency, DOGE policy prerogatives set by President Donald Trump have been taken over by the appropriate agencies and remain a mission of the administration, one of the two senior officials told the caller. OPM has always been the hub of the workforce while the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) continues its role in budgeting and deregulation, the official added to the caller.

The other senior official told the caller that DOGE has always been rather decentralized and refers more to a group of people within the administration focused on reducing waste rather than a specific office.

Speaking about DOGE staff, one of the senior administration officials told the caller that many people who worked with DOGE were designated by their agency to do this work but were not strictly employees of the DOGE agency. Of the few people who originally worked for DOGE, some were absorbed by different agencies, such as the Department of War, to become part of an internal DOGE team.

An administration official told the Caller that the U.S. DOGE service continues to have a central office and staff, which helps drive agency modernization efforts.

While he was alive, a senior administration official told the caller that things had changed since DOGE lost its leader, Musk. (RELATED: “It’s Really Hard”: Elon Musk Reflects on DOGE’s Successes and Challenges at 100 Days)

DOGE has not had much power or influence as a centralized entity since the departure of Musk and Steve Davis (DOGE’s head of operations), the official told the caller. The source explained that this is partly because Musk has cabinet-level power and direct appeal from the president. At the time of departure, no one filled Musk’s role, leaving the agency with less prominence, the official told the caller.

Regardless of the size of the office or staff, a senior administration official told the caller that the first 100 days allowed DOGE to impact the remainder of Trump’s term.

“I think DOGE was intended to create expectations of control in agencies, to give energy, shock and awe and open the Overton window to other policy changes… we can now fire a lot of people, cut subsidies, we have a lot of these tools at our disposal, legally justified in many cases and also the public space to make more moderate reforms with a different public consciousness,” the official said.

“Can you imagine if in [the first Trump administration] we said we wanted to make layoffs or end tons of funding for agency priorities? added the official. “We all owe Elon and DOGE a huge thank you for this.”
