I’ll be honest when I say that I didn’t think I would like portable power stations this much. Sure, I knew they would be useful while camping or in a power outage, but I didn’t realize how often I would use them in my normal daily life. After testing more than a dozen portable power stations, there’s one that stands out as the favorite, and it’s at a new all-time high price for Black Friday.

Anker has stepped up its game with this Gen 2 model of the C1000. For starters, it’s lighter than the original C1000 (which I also like, actually). This newer model weighs 24.9 pounds, making it very easy to transport from room to room in case of a breakdown. It only weighs a few pounds less than the original model, but it makes a big difference. Anker also redesigned the overall shape of the Gen 2, making it easier to wear.

I’m also in love with Anker’s thoughtful port design on the C1000 Gen 2. Two UBS-C ports rated at up to 140W and the five AC ports are spread out enough that it’s not difficult to plug in larger items like battery chargers.

Aside from camping and power outages, I actually find myself packing the Solix C1000 Gen 2 when I visit my parents’ house. Their 1950s house lacks electrical outlets, so I pack alongside the power station to stay on the guest bedroom nightstand and charge my phone each evening. In fact, it powers my laptop while I type at my parents’ house before we tackle Thanksgiving dinner.

Really, the only reason I would choose the original Solix C1000 over the new Gen 2 is that the older model came with a built-in light bar. This is extremely useful during a power outage when you are carrying the power station up the stairs and need some lighting to light the way. However, the Anker Solix C1000 is only on sale for $397 during Black Friday, down from $349 for the Gen 2. Unless you really want this light bar, I’d go with the Gen 2’s cheaper price.
