I tested Sony’s legendary XM5 headphones against the newer version, the XM6, as did senior shopping reporter Bethany Allard. And we both discovered that they were much more alike than different. Unless you’re a picky audiophile, I think most people should opt for the XM5 model while it’s on sale, which is what Allard recommended in his comparison. These headphones have never been sold at such a low price, and they still have all the features you really need: excellent audio quality, best-in-class active noise cancellation, and an easy-to-use app for adjusting EQ settings.

The second-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones are the best noise-cancelling headphones of 2025, period. The only buds that really come close? The first generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones, which I’m wearing as I write this sentence. These headphones are extremely comfortable and allow you to slip into a cone of silence on demand.
