One of the biggest Kentucky high school football games of the season ended in controversy Friday night.

Boyle Countythe No. 4 team in the Commonwealth — according to Massey Ratings — hosted the 14th team Corbin in the semifinals of the KHSAA 4A playoffs. Boyle Co. held a 34-33 lead with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter and had possession just past midfield.

An awkward snap saw the Rebels quarterback dive for the loose ball, but he couldn’t get it back as Corbin’s defense swarmed and looked to recover. The Redhounds would have had a great opportunity in Boyle Co. territory, but it didn’t happen.

As the Rebels QB dove to get the ball, an official blew the whistle far too early and signaled for the clock to continue ticking. Meanwhile, another official signaled possession in favor of Corbin once Corbin actually recovered the ball.

The officials got together and decided it was still Boyle Co.’s ball because play was interrupted by the early whistle. This unfortunate mistake led to a 34-33 victory for the Rebels and heartbreak for the Redhounds.

Boyle County has been a 4A monster and is currently playing in its seventh championship game in the last nine seasons. He is now 13-1 on the year and will face Franklin County next week at Kroger Field in Lexington.

Corbin’s season ends at 10-4. The fumble and early whistle will be a talking point in the 606 for years to come.
