As a Call of Duty player, I know that quick responses can be the difference between achieving victory and languishing at the bottom of the leaderboard. But until I play Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on the new LG G5 OLEDI didn’t know there was anything else so crucial.

For what? One reason is the exceptional, best-in-class brightness that brings the visuals to life: it’s the brightest OLED I’ve ever seen in the CNET TV Lab. Its clarity allowed me to see both the light and dark parts of the screen, in a way that other TVs I tested couldn’t replicate. For example, it was harder for enemies to hide in the shadows because the TV rendered shadows sharper.

My experience with the LG G5 Evo AI OLED

Image quality is so important when it comes to gaming because some of the latest advancements, such as HDR10 and Dolby Visionhelp improve the gaming experience significantly, and the G5 can take full advantage of it. Zooming in on the Black Ops 6 Protocol map, it was the clarity of the G5’s images that struck me. I visited the grounds of the old naval fort in this map – the sky was a bright blue and the buildings loomed out of the sea – everything seemed more realistic, as it would if you walked there on an autumn afternoon.

But in the middle of my daydream, I discovered that people were shooting at me. Like, a lot.

As part of my testing, I compared the LG G5 to four other TVs, including the new Samsung S95F, the LG C5, and two LCDs, all connected to the same Xbox. (With five screens showing at once, it felt like I was starring in my own personal movie) e-sports event.)

I’ve played several games, including Doom, Ori, and Blind Forest, but I’ve seen the biggest improvements in Call of Duty. What stood out immediately about the G5 when playing games was its brightness. Combined with the TV’s deep contrast, the G5’s picture popped in a way the competition didn’t.

That brightness I saw on the G5? It is thanks to LG’s new quad-battery panelwhich literally stacks two blue OLEDs (and one red and one green) on top of each other for its dazzling light output.

This is a technology that appears to be unique to the G5 for now, but that’s not the only advantage it has over the slightly cheaper and slightly darker Samsung S95F. Unless something changes, a Samsung TV will never check the Dolby Vision box: it’s HDR10 only. CNET’s buying advice

I can’t say that playing on the G5 in CNET’s lab made me a better gamer – there are other crucial factors, including networking, that can reduce lag – but I had a lot of fun reviewing old maps and new ones on this fantastic TV. This is definitely a “must have” for serious gamers.

If you just want a good TV for gaming, you don’t need to spend $3,000; There is lots of budget TVs under a big one, and most of them will give you an enjoyable gaming experience. Still, if you’re looking for your ultimate gaming setup, the LG G5 has everything you need.
