If you browse Paramount+’s massive library of shows, you’ll find a well-varied selection of big hits like Taylor Sheridan and other big hitters. But I always love it when I find something awesome that I’ve never heard of before.

Except for the fantastic Star Trek: Lower decks (which I watched several times), this weekend I’m sharing a few TV shows I’ve recently discovered, one that comedy fans won’t be able to stop watching, and another that will appeal to those who love a certain sticky, budding plant. Have a nice weekend! Let’s go!

Star Trek: Lower Decks

I grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Kirk was cool, but Jean Luc Picard was definitely my captain, and I embraced the less campy, realistic feel of the film. TNG world. Even though it is an animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks plays in a similar era, or shortly after, and I loved every 25 minute episode. OK, so there are 50 over five seasons, so you probably won’t get through them in one weekend, but if you love them as much as I do, you might.

The Emmy Nominee Lower decks is great because it shifts the focus from Starfleet’s great captains and celebrities at the bridge level to the underappreciated support crew of the USS Cerritos as they wander through Federation space. It follows a tight-knit team of ensigns, including fiery rule-breaker Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), super-ambitious Brad Boimler (The boys‘ Jack Quaid), medical intern D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and cyborg engineer Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Together they do all the dirty maintenance work on the ship, but sometimes find themselves embroiled in strange and dangerous missions outside where they take every opportunity to show off to the senior officers.

From the creator of Rick and Morty Ad Solar opposites, Lower decks is full of Trek jokes and deep references that Trekkies will love, and the animation is clean, colorful, and worthy of Gene Roddenberry’s legendary universe.

The Comedy Store

Mitzy Shore’s legendary Sunset Strip club, The Comedy Store, is arguably the most important venue in the history of modern American stand-up. No one had a radar for funny like Mitzy, and if you could make her laugh, you might just get your chance on one of her scenes, hoping to propel yourself to the big time. Its storied, more than 50-year history has launched the careers of the best to ever step on the mic, from Pryor, Williams, Kinison and Letterman to Leno, Carrey, Barr, Burr, Rock, Rogan and countless others who don’t need first names.

Show time The Comedy Store is an in-depth five-part miniseries from store regular Mike Binder that brings together some of the best rare archival footage in the store’s history, giving viewers a front-row seat to some of the career-defining moments of these greats. But it all ties together with current interviews from the comedy elites who were in attendance, many of them mentioned above, who share inside stories and crazy memories of the club.

If you love or are fascinated by the history of comedy, I’m willing to bet you’ll crush this series in one sitting.

Bong traveling through time

As a big fan of Big city And Spa time machineI’m absolutely amazed to discover this crazy three-part science fiction series. What started as a ridiculous two-minute CollegeHumor sketch by Big city comrades Ilana Glazer and Paul W. Downs, you won’t be surprised to hear this Bong traveling through time is as half-baked as it looks.

Glazer and Downs play exhausted cousins Sharee and Jeff, who discover a magical bong that, when smoked, sends them through a Bill & Ted-like wormhole through time and space. Irreverent New Jerseyans find themselves traveling through history, making stops in ancient Greece (it’s a giant toga party), the Salem witch trials (where they think Sharee is a witch), prehistoric Earth (yes, they encounter dinosaurs), and a Hunger Games-like dystopian future where the poor are hunted for sport. However, each time they return home, they discover how their actions have disrupted the timeline.

Bong traveling through time is a lot of fun and delightfully weird, and Glazer and Downs’ chemistry is undeniable, making it a very watchable and easily bingeable show. These are low-budget special effects that succeed Spa time machine charm which I also love, and given that it has a 92% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I’m shocked I hadn’t heard about it sooner.
