Could the GOP Retire Itself Into the Minority in 2026? Who’s In and Who’s Out for the Midterms – RedState

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Republicans face this “traditional” wisdom that the party in the White House tends to lose seats. Lawmakers will soon return home for Christmas, where they will not only spend the holiday with their families but also make crucial decisions regarding 2026 and their political futures. Although we like to say that every election is the most important, for Republicans, maintaining control of the House and Senate is important in many ways. When the electoral dust settles, who will be left standing to maintain this Republican majority?

The report notes that most of the retirements are coming from “safe seats” for the Republican Party, but could still put additional pressure on the Republican Party. Home Speaker Mike Johnson and the party’s majority in the House of Representatives, which currently sits at 220-213.
Members of the House of Representatives have announced their departures from Congress at a record pace, as 40 members, or about 10 percent, have already said they will not run for reelection in 2026. That number could increase after the Christmas break. Retirements in the Senate are about the same as in the 2024 cycle, but in the House of Representatives, retirements are occurring at the highest rate in more than a decade. At the same time in 2023, there were only 30 retirements. In 2018, Republicans lost 42 seats in the House, and 32 of them said they would not run again in 2017. Currently, Republicans lead Democrats in retirement announcements, 23 to 17.

One odd factor might be the mid-decade trend toward redistricting. Redistricting is expected to be favorable to the Republican Party in places like Texas, where the Supreme Court recently cleared the way for using the state’s new map, and where Republicans could pick up five House seats. Florida also kicked off the redistricting debate, and Missouri’s new map allows the Republican Party to win a seat.
The other good news for Republicans is that many of the seats where GOP House members are retiring are considered safe Republican seats. Only Rep. Don Bacon’s (NE-02) seat is expected to go to Democrats in 2026. Some are running for other offices, including Reps. Elise Stefanik (NY-21) and Nancy Mace (SC-01), who are running for governor of their respective states. Back in Texas, four GOP House members, Morgan Luttrell (08), Jodey Arrington (19), Troy Nehls (22), and Michael McCaul (10), have all said they will not run in 2026. Interestingly, none of them faced serious primary challengers.
Codify all of Trump’s executive orders.
ALL.
And I suggest you do it BEFORE the 2026 midterm elections.

While the Democratic Party may be trying to purge itself of dinosaurs like Reps. Nancy Pelosi (CA-11), 85, and Jerry Nadler (NY-12), 78, some Republicans didn’t take the hint. Reps. Hal Rogers (KY-05), 87, and John Carter (TX-31), 84, have said they will run for re-election.

But if Republicans haven’t gotten the message that 2026 isn’t your dad’s midterm election, they better educate themselves. Democrats are angry and desperate, a dangerous combination. Trump Derangement Syndrome is at the root of everything they do, including their election strategy. With House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), the Trump agenda comes to a screeching halt, if for no other reason than Democrats will be fully immersed in impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump, and likely Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, to name a few. In addition to “Trump-proofing the country,” they would also likely pass legislation such as expanding access to the Affordable Care Act to include illegal immigrants, climate change and more. The American people will once again take second place to their madness.
If ever there was an election where, not just for Republicans, but for the country as a whole, conventional wisdom should go the way of pet rocks and mules, it’s the 2026 midterm elections.

The GOP needs to energize the base and move full steam ahead with redistricting. Don’t let the Democrats stand in the way of Trump’s final two years in office!
