It could be a little late for the party, but Threads finally has a dedicated DM function independent of Instagram. The problem is that it is really basic.

For the moment, you can only send a message to the people you follow and who follow you. It will also work for your mutual subscribers on Instagram even if you don’t follow yourself on threads – a reminder that threads are really an Instagram product.

Start of a DM on the wires

After updating the application on iPhone or Android (or accessing the site on the web), you will see a new messages icon in the lower toolbar next to the home button. Once you are on the new messages page, you can press the “New message” button at the top right to start a cat. You can search for a profile or choose one of the recommended options to start the conversation.

This messages tab is the only way to start a new cat at the moment. You cannot DM someone directly from their profile, even if you both follow yourself. However, you can now share a message of threads with one of your subscribers directly in a DM. When I share a post of threads with a friend, he appears in the DM Threads window, instead of Instagram DM.

Once you have sent a message, you can press it long to see it again. You can also support messages in the long term to react, respond online or copy them. But that’s about it. There is no management of images, voicemail, cat themes or many common features cooked in the DMS and messaging applications these days.

DM threads still need a lot of work

In the current state of things, the DMS of the wires are quite limited. But there is a series of features in the work that you can expect impatiently, in particular:

  • Message controls: The upcoming moderation feature will allow you to decide who can send you messages, and you can choose to limit DMS only to people who follow you on threads or Instagram.

  • Message request file: A dedicated message request file for new messages will ensure that spam will not land directly in your DMS.

  • Group messaging: Threads allow group conversations in a subsequent update.

  • Filters: Threads will also provide filters to find and respond to messages.
