Sony’s Afeela electric vehicle will offer digital license plates

Sony’s ever-evolving electric vehicle will enable a degree of license plate customization never before thought possible.
According to TechRadar, Sony’s Afeela EV (which has been shown off at several CES events in previous years but is still not on sale) will pioneer something new: digital license plates. Sony is partnering with a company called Reviver to integrate its RPlate technology, which lets you personalize the content of your license plate with a smartphone app.
For vanity plate fans, life may never be the same.

According to TechRadar, it’s a simple HD display that lets you switch between black and white backgrounds, with the added ability to write personalized messages at the bottom of the plate, presumably while keeping your license plate number above them. Examples of possible messages include social media handles or slogans, although as TechRadar pointed out, it’s not yet clear whether profanity will be allowed.
Many U.S. states also have various laws governing how license plates must appear on vehicles, and technology like this would need to comply with many state laws and regulations.
These and other questions about the Afeela will have to wait until the car’s launch to be answered. It still hasn’t been released, despite first appearing at CES in 2023, and is rumored to cost American drivers almost $90,000. That’s a lot of money to spend on wacky license plate capabilities.
