Arctic air plunged temperatures into the teens, with widespread wind chills in the single digits expected through mid-morning Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, this cold spell brings high risks of exposure to cold. Adding to the cold, northwest winds gusting to 15 to 25 mph will bring peak gusts up to 35 mph. These winds could easily send unsecured outdoor objects flying, including Christmas decorations.

A Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect for all of central North Carolina until 9 a.m. Monday.

Staying safe in cold weather

  • Dress in layers, including hats and gloves.

  • Make sure children are properly dressed for the cold.

  • Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Provide outdoor animals with warm, dry shelter, food and unfrozen water.

  • Check in on older family members, friends and neighbors regularly.

  • Use portable heaters safely and avoid using generators or grills indoors.
