New Orleans is the first American city to have real-time facial recognition: if you are wanted and you pass one of the system’s cameras, it could flag you. The problem: It’s a private system, and even though the new mayor and police chief disagree over facial recognition, this nonprofit says it can establish its own “guardrails” by providing real-time information to police, sidestepping the debate over government regulation and privacy.
