Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been charged with home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering in connection with an alleged incident that occurred after he was fired from his job with the Wolverines this week.

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office charged Moore on Friday with “unlawfully entering the home of a victim with whom Mr. Moore was romantically involved.” Michigan fired Moore for cause on Wednesday after a university investigation found “credible evidence” that he “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the school said in a statement.

Moore, who has been in the Washtenaw County Jail since Wednesday, appeared in court via video. The home invasion charge is a third-degree felony and punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,000 fine. The other two charges are misdemeanors.

A not guilty plea was entered on Moore’s behalf.

First Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski told the court that Moore “barged” into the woman’s apartment while she was home, grabbed butter knives and scissors and threatened to kill himself in front of her.

Rezmierski said Moore told the woman, “My blood is on your hands” and “You’ve ruined my life” as part of “a series of very, very threatening, intimidating, terrifying, frankly, statements and behavior.”

“While I understand there is no evidence to suggest he directly threatened the victim with any of the tools I indicated, the entire conduct is very threatening and very intimidating,” Rezmierski said. “She was terrified.”

Defense attorney Joe Simon said Moore was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation after being arrested Wednesday and then returned to jail.

“There is no evidence to suggest he poses a threat,” Simon said.

Bail was set at $25,000 with the additional conditions of GPS wire monitoring, mental health treatment and an order not to contact the alleged victim or go to his home. A probable cause conference was scheduled for January 22.

Simon told reporters at the courthouse, he expected Moore to post bond Friday. The lawyer would not comment on Moore’s mental health.

Moore is married and has three young children. He was 17-8 in two seasons as coach of the Wolverines. The team is scheduled to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31 under interim coach Biff Poggi.
