Fired Michigan coach Sherrone Moore can rebound from arrest, Ed Orgeron says

Sherrone Moore’s career looks bleak, but a national champion coach thinks he can bounce back.

The former Michigan head coach was fired last week after the university said it found he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. Hours later, he was arrested after allegedly breaking into an employee’s house and threatening to kill himself.

Moore, if convicted, faces more than half a decade behind bars, which would certainly further dampen any hope he might have of returning to the sidelines.

But in a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Ed Orgeron said anything is possible.

“I think coaches can always bounce back. Once you make changes in your personal life that may have affected you – losing your job and stuff like that – my dad used to tell me that time heals everything. Once you make some adjustments that you need, you might have to start over at a lower position and work your way up, I think people can always do that,” Orgeron said.

Moore’s wife reportedly called 911, saying her husband was “suicidal” after losing his job, and that one of the conditions of his bond was that he continue mental health treatment after undergoing two post-arrest evaluations.

“I hope the things that bother coach, I hope he gets help if he needs it, and I hope he makes those adjustments,” Orgeron said.

“I think the first thing, though, is that he’s okay. And I want everyone else who’s in that situation to put themselves in order first. Everything else will fall into place. So, coach, if you’re listening, get yourselves in order. And everything else will fall into place.”

Prosecutors accused Moore of contacting the staffer by phone and text after the breakup, prompting the woman to contact the University of Michigan and cooperate with its investigation. Moore was later fired from his job as head football coach, which prosecutors say prompted him to show up at her home.

Moore then allegedly “barged” into the residence, grabbed a butter knife and a pair of kitchen scissors and began threatening his own life. According to prosecutors, Moore told the staffer, “My blood is on your hands” and “You have ruined my life.”

Prosecutors claimed Moore “terrorized” the staffer and said they considered him a “risk to public safety.”

Moore faces more than six years in prison if convicted. His next court date is scheduled for January 22.
