Trump Pulls the Plug on Offshore Wind Projects After War Dept. Flags Security Threats – RedState

The Biden administration’s obsessive push for massive offshore wind farms just failed. Again.
On Monday, the DOI (Department of the Interior) abruptly announced an immediate suspension of all large-scale offshore wind energy leasing in U.S. waters.
Why this sudden stop?
According to the DOI statement, the War Department cited “national security risks” in recently completed classified reports – serious enough to halt the construction of wind farms across the country. The agency says it needs time to “evaluate the feasibility of mitigating” these risks with tenants and state partners.
Translation: The Biden administration has happily shoveled several so-called “green energy” mandates down America’s throats for four years. Just one problem: It turns out that wind turbines are not only ridiculously expensive, unreliable, and a danger to wildlife, but they could also be dangerous.
Who knew? Almost everyone except the climate is rumbling.
The DOI said in a press release that the pause “will provide the Department, as well as the Department of War and other relevant government agencies, time to work with tenants and state partners to evaluate the feasibility of mitigating the national security risks posed by these projects.”
The department has listed five leases that will be immediately suspended: Vineyard Wind1, Revolution Wind, CVOW, Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind. Unconfirmed reports suggest that seagulls near the five projects heaved a “yuuge” sigh of relief upon reading the announcement.
DOI Secretary Doug Burgum said in the press release:
The primary duty of the United States government is to protect the American people. Today’s action responds to emerging national security risks, including the rapid evolution of relevant adversary technologies and vulnerabilities created by large-scale offshore wind projects near our East Coast population centers. The Trump Administration will always put the safety of the American people first.
But, but, but what about bad carbon emissions?! Rising sea levels? The melting of polar ice? Again and again, ad nauseam.

As for these “risks to national security”
Here’s more:
The department pointed to unclassified U.S. government reports in the past that “have long discovered” that massive turbine blades in large-scale offshore wind projects can create radar interference called “clutter” that can obscure legitimate moving targets and generate false targets.
In 2024, a report found that while the radar false alarm detection threshold can be increased to reduce some of this “clutter”, radar can “miss real targets” when this threshold is increased.
“Today’s action ensures that the national security risks posed by offshore wind projects are appropriately addressed and that the U.S. government maintains its ability to effectively defend the American people,” the press release said.
Clearly, the War Department, the Interior Department, and the Trump administration have been wise in not announcing specific national security threats — about which, I imagine, the left’s climate scolds are already howling at the moon. So be it. Truth be told, I hope they are.
