How Trump’s proposed tariffs could raise homebuilding costs, in charts

NBC News shaped a 3 -bedroom house and found that the prices have added more than $ 4,000 to total costs.
Canada Lumber? It will still be $ 534.
Main devices from China? Add $ 445.
In the United States, new houses should cost more than President Donald Trump’s pricing program, which should increase the costs of a wide variety of materials that enter into the construction of houses.
An analysis of the NBC news of building materials and import data revealed that the total cost of building a single -of -range house could increase by $ 4,000 – an estimate that industry experts who have examined the conservative analysis. A survey in April of the National Association of Home Builders estimated that prices have pricing impacts at $ 10,900 per home. Neither analyzes included labor costs.
Robert Dietz, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders, said the prices have an impact beyond their direct cost while sending undulating uncertainty in the supply chain and leaves manufacturers uncertain in the way of planning for the future.
“About three -quarters of house manufacturers are struggling at pricing their home for buyers due to uncertainty due to construction input costs,” said Dietz.
The United States remains in a shortage of housing that has increased costs. The NBC News Home Buyer index, which measures the difficulty of a local housing market, has remained at an extreme difficulty for more than two years. And conversations on how to encourage the construction of more housing has become an important part of American political discussions, especially among some Democrats.
Trump, on the other hand, continued to continue an aggressive price program while promising that the United States would sign commercial agreements, most of which have not yet materialized.
Whether the prices are implemented, interrupted or reversed, the cost impacts will vary considerably depending on suppliers, materials and regions. Dietz said that if some suppliers can initially absorb parts of price costs, “in general, long -term, you expect consumers to pay most prices”.
NBC News modeled the cost of materials for a single -family house of 1,800 square feet, then analyzed the import and investigation data of the American commercial commission and the annual manufacturing survey of the census office to determine which countries dominate the chain of supply for the construction of houses. While some fundamental materials such as concrete come to the country, others – such as electrical equipment, lighting and accessories – depend strongly on imports.
The products of China, Mexico and Canada – countries which are currently pricing at high rates – are responsible for the most important cost increases in our model house. We succeeded by calculating a weighted rate rate for each element according to the share of imports of each country and the rate rate for this country, assuming that the total cost of each rate has been transmitted to the consumer.
Materials mainly imported from China would add $ 1,708 to home costs, Canadian products would contribute $ 1,300 and Mexican imports would add $ 981.
Take wood, for example. NBC News calculated that a typical 1,800 square feet house requires around 14,400 feet of frame of frame, totaling about $ 7,762 at wholesale prices. Nearly a third of the American wood supply is imported and Canada provided almost 80% of the $ 14.5 billion in annual imports in 2021.
