BUENOS AIRES (AP) — After a few years of experience before the United Nations atomic watchdog agency, Argentine diplomat Rafael Grossi is considering with enough hope to undertake a profound reform of the multilateral body as the second secretary general of Latin American origin in its history.
“The United Nations must register for what will be created,” Grossi stressed les lunes at the official launch in Buenos Aires of the candidacy for the maximum charges of the United Nations for the period 2027-2031.
“In front of the world, we have today, when we observe the map of the world, from Sudan to Gaza, Ukraine and Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Rwanda and Congo, Thailand and Cambodia, before all these conflicts, we have noticed that our entry and our concerns: it is the origin of the United Nations,” he affirmed.
The diplomat, for 64 years, has headed the Organismo Internacional de la Energía Atómica (OIEA) since 2019. I became the second UN Secretary General of Latin American origin after the Peruvian Javier Pérez de Cuellar.
“We need a secretary general who has the boots and is going to have the problem, we need a secretary general who crosses the front line, even if it is a war… This is my personal compromise, which is based on my own experience,” underlined the diplomat, who was also open to the commitment to a policy of austerity to tackle criticism of the financial management of the multilateral body.
At the same ceremony, Grossi received the formal response to his candidacy for governor from Javier Milei.
“Argentina offers an experienced and virtuoso leader. Serene, reliable and oriented towards the modernization process that the multilateral system needs”, expressed the annuller Pablo Quirno.
For the next period there are also applications for other Latin American representatives. Chile applied to its President Michelle Bachelet, who assigned Costa Rica to Vice President Rebeca Grynspan. Ambas aspires to become the first woman to hold the post of secretary general.
“Today we have to fail the functioning United Nations. Yes, it is not something impossible to record. In 2026 we are going to play in the World Cup and we think we are going to win both,” Grossi said.
