TRENDING STORIES:

The shooting happened Tuesday around 6 p.m.

McCollum’s brother, DeRonn McCollum, said the biggest thing was having to explain to the five children that they would never see their mother again.

“The most important thing is the kids,” McCollum said.

McCollum said his sister did not live in Eden Park and did not know what led to the shooting.

Police have not released any information about a possible suspect or what might have led to the shooting.

A resident of the building, Dashawn Grisby, said residents heard an altercation on the fourth floor Tuesday evening, then a gunshot and a scream.

McCollum said her sister was someone who embraced life in all its facets, had a bold personality and made the most of every day she was given.

“Tekeya’s legacy is just over-the-top and very dramatic and embraces who she was as a person,” McCollum said.

This is not the first tragedy to strike the McCollum family.

In October 2024, McCollum’s grandmother, Patricia McCollum, and her two adopted children, DJ, 32, and Kaydence, 11, were found dead inside her home after being stabbed.

Anthony Mathis, 66, stabbed all three family members, then died of self-inflicted injuries at UC Medical Center after an hours-long standoff with Cincinnati police.

Tuesday’s shooting marks the second shooting to take place in Park Eden in the past week. A man was injured after a shooting on December 18.

Several other shootings have occurred in the building this year and residents have had enough.

“There are elderly people here, and there are children here, and we live right across the street from the elementary school,” Grigsby said. “We all got together and told our property management we needed security.”

The Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority said after Tuesday’s shooting. It reads:

“The Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority acknowledges the unfortunate incident that occurred last night at Park Eden in Walnut Hills. We are cooperating with the Cincinnati Police for the well-being of our residents as well as the local community. We are continually employing a multi-tiered safety approach that includes collaboration with our residents, active monitoring and partnerships with law enforcement. We encourage Park Eden residents to share with police any information they may have regarding the incident. CMHA and Touchstone Property Services are communicating with residents of Park Eden on the next steps moving forward.
