Young Queens man found dead in reservoir outside Baltimore

A Queens man traveling with friends was found dead in a reservoir just outside Baltimore, the authorities said.
Smith Veras, 20, was last seen at the Liberty Reservoir on Thursday. Witnesses spotted him swimming in the tank about 17 miles northwest of Baltimore before disappearing.
His body was found on Saturday.
“He and three friends were swimming. They went down and jumped into the water. They swam on an island, and halfway … He started going underwater,” Brandon Holland said the Baltimore banner’s Sheriff’s office. “It was seen for the last time halfway.”
The disappearance of Veras sparked in -depth research in the Liberty reservoir, which varies from 3 to 70 feet deep in places. A large group of local research and rescue teams that worked on the scene Thursday and Friday was joined by state teams on Saturday, when the body was finally found.
Swimming in the Liberty reservoir is prohibited due to the dangers posed by deep waters, which can also become extremely cold in places due to its depth.

At least two other people have died in Liberty Reservoir since 2010, according to published reports. In 2017, a man was accused of cruelty to animals after throwing his dog’s body into the tank.
