Massive Increase in Demand for Rentals Driven by Influx of ‘Foreign-Born Population,’ Says HUD – RedState

In this episode of “Yeah, Joe Did That”…
Let’s get straight to the point:
Between 2022 and 2024, nearly two-thirds of U.S. rental demand came from the foreign-born population. Today, as American families struggle to cope with rent hikes or are priced out of their apartments and neighborhoods altogether, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released its latest biennial report to Congress on Worst Housing Need, in which the rent crisis is laid bare.
By the numbers
The report reveals:
Immigration is one of the main causes of increased need in the worst case scenario. Between 2021 and 2024, the foreign-born population in the United States increased by more than 6 million, the largest increase over such a short period in American history.
The foreign-born population now stands at more than 53 million, representing the highest share of the U.S. population in history.
This increase in the number of households due to immigration has contributed to a significant increase in demand for housing, thereby driving up property prices. In fact, in some markets, immigration is responsible for almost all of the increase in housing demand in recent years.
Shocked? Me neither.
The report also finds that renter households with the worst housing needs are very low-income families who receive no government housing assistance and yet pay more than half their income in rent, live in very inadequate conditions, or both.
During the 2019-2021 period – amid the COVID-19 pandemic – according to the report, household growth surged alongside rising interest rates that stifled homeownership, falling incomes and rising rents, pushing the most pessimistic needs to a record high of 8.53 million households.
From 2021 to 2023, this figure remained high at 8.46 million households – virtually unchanged – highlighting a continuing rental disaster. (Joe was good at creating disasters, you know – see: Bidenflation, Bidenomics, Biden’s open border policy, et al.)

Democrats’ new buzzword is ‘affordability,’ but mass immigration puts housing market at ‘breaking point’
Although the HUD report does not differentiate between immigrants who entered the United States legally and the illegals who flooded into the country by the millions during the Biden presidency, it doesn’t take a census wizard to do the math, especially when it comes to immigration numbers. Before back when Joe was in power and raiding the illegals he (translation: his handlers) had practically invited into the country with welcoming mariachi bands.
Yeah. Joe did – happily.
“Finally, because the supply of housing is much less elastic than demand,” explains the report, while specifying (my emphasis):
Moderating demand may be a more effective policy option than highly laudable efforts to increase supply. We hope that policy makers, practitioners, researchers and the public will find this report informative and compelling. We look forward to moving forward with a common goal to meet this great challenge.
The same goes for most sane Americans.
Then again, from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to New York City’s new Mayor Zohran Mamdani to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and other big-city Democratic mayors, something tells me the rental fiasco isn’t going to get better any time soon.
