As someone who works from home and plays a lot of PC games, I spend countless hours at my desk. I try to stay active outside of work, but I still end up sitting for long periods of time.

After years of settling for a standard $60 office chair, I finally upgraded to something substantial — and it’s the best purchase I’ve made in years.

The Steelcase Leap V2 changed my life

I’ve had ergonomic chairs from the likes of Herman Miller and Steelcase on my wish list for years. However, their high price has always put me off. As a young adult, I didn’t think much about my health and tended to prioritize my spending over other things: my car, my travel, my OLED TV, my fancy mechanical keyboards, and the gaming PC itself.

However, when I found a great deal on a refurbished Steelcase Leap V2, I decided to pull the trigger.

The second I assembled my chair and sat in it, I was blown away by how comfortable and supportive it was. I couldn’t believe I had waited so long. Every hard hour I had spent in my old chair came flooding back to me and I immediately regretted not upgrading years ago.

I’ve been sitting in the chair for eight to ten hours every work day for a month now and frankly haven’t received any complaints. It took a few days for my lower back to get used to the firm support offered by the Leap V2, but after that it was smooth sailing. I no longer have upper back and shoulder pain, and the back support doesn’t dig into my shoulder blades like my old chair did.

For the first time in my life, I don’t mind sitting at my desk and I no longer actively avoid it like I used to. In fact, I can’t wait to settle into my new comfy chair after hitting the gym. Whether I’m working or playing, this chair has truly allowed me to enjoy every minute I spend at my desk.

If you’re wondering why I chose the Leap V2 over the Herman Miller Aeron or another chair, it mostly comes down to personal preference rather than superiority: both chairs are high-end models.

I tried the Aeron, and while it’s certainly comfortable, I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much as the Leap V2. The Leap V2’s foam padding feels better to me than the Aeron’s mesh, and its excellent recline system allows me to put my feet up, play games, or even tap on my knees, all while keeping my back fully supported.

The Steelcase Leap v2 Americas is an ergonomic office chair designed to provide personalized, highly adjustable support for a wide range of work styles. Its LiveBack® technology allows the chair to move with your spine, maintaining comfort and alignment throughout the day.

Ergonomic chairs are worth every penny

To the untrained eye, an ergonomic chair looks pretty much like any other chair: just a few large pieces of plastic covered in fabric. However, there are several reasons why ergonomic chairs cost much more than the materials used in the chairs (although this is also a major cost factor).

Above all, hundreds, if not thousands, of human hours are devoted to the research and development of these chairs. Teams of engineers, medical specialists, designers and other professionals collaborate to create ergonomic chairs, with occasional iterations over the years that further improve the original design.

Just read about how the Herman Miller Aeron chair came to be and you’ll understand why ergonomic chairs cost so much.

Build quality is another major factor. Every material that goes into these expensive ergonomic chairs is of exceptional quality and designed to withstand years of use and abuse.

My Leap V2 may look like a flimsy little chair to the untrained eye, but it can actually hold up to 400 pounds, more than double my weight. It’s also surprisingly heavy, at 50 pounds. I had trouble getting this chair upstairs to my apartment. Even lifting it off the ground is much more difficult than my old office chair.

You can feel quality in every part of the chair. Every button, armrest adjustment and lever feels substantial. Speaking of levers, ergonomic chairs offer many types of adjustments not found on cheap office chairs.

My Leap V2 has a seat height adjustable, depth adjustable, lumbar support, upper back firmness, armrests in all directions and a backrest for reclining. This means the chair can be adapted to a wide range of body types and sizes, instead of just the adjustable height you get with a basic office chair.

Plus, the chair moves with me. The Leap V2 uses Steelcase’s proprietary “LiveBack” technology, which moves with my spine and keeps it supported, as well as a “Natural Glide” system that allows the seat to slide forward when I recline.

It is impossible to sit in the same position all day. With all these adjustments and smart technologies, I can cycle through different sitting positions without compromising my health.

Why it’s worth investing in a good office chair

Avoid the gaming chair trap and get something that lasts

If you are considering a gaming chair in 2025, think twice before purchasing one. While there are decent gaming chairs on the market, many prioritize style over functionality. It is much better to invest in a quality chair from a brand known for its ergonomic seating.

The only real downside to ergonomic chairs is their price. Living outside the EU, I found a refurbished Steelcase Leap V2 for a decent price, but after import and shipping fees it still cost me around $1,000, only $350 less than a new one.

Looking back, I probably should have bought it brand new, because I think the price is worth it. However, in the United States, you can find renovated units at a reasonable price; for example, Crandall sells fully reconditioned Leap V2 chairs for $650, with the same 12-year warranty as a new chair.

However, you don’t need a high-end model to get most of the benefits. Something like the Steelcase Series 1 is also a solid option at less than half the price of the Leap V2, and you can probably find a used model that costs a fraction of the price. If you’re a PC gamer or work from home, a comfortable chair is a must!
