Injured hiker rescued by Black Hawk helicopter crew in Yavapai County

On New Year’s Day, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office was busy helping three hikers in distress, including a rescue involving a Black Hawk military helicopter.

Shortly before 6 p.m. on January 1, a 55-year-old man suffered serious leg injuries after falling from an ledge while walking on Bumble Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

The hiker and members of the search and rescue team began experiencing symptoms of hypothermia brought on by falling temperatures and constant rain, the sheriff’s office said.

A fire provided warmth all night. Flooding prevented first responders from getting the hiker to safety by land, and several rescue attempts were delayed by dangerous flying conditions due to the weather, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies worked with the Arizona Department of Military Affairs to request a military Black Hawk, the agency said.

Around 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 2, a Black Hawk crew was able to rescue the injured hiker and take him to medical personnel, the sheriff’s office said.

Around 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 1 in Wickenburg, officers and a Forest Patrol deputy located a lost hiker and escorted her to her vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. And around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 1, a deputy found a lost hiker on a Sedona trail and brought him to safety, the sheriff’s office said.
