Returns of “The Pitt,” Grid and Kid Laroi’s music are among the new TV shows, movies and music coming to a device near you.

Returns to ‘The Pitt,’ the Grid and the music of Kid Laroi are some of the new TV, movies and music coming to a device near you.

The first week of January brings two sophomore efforts: Laroi’s album “Before I Forget” and the second season of the Emmy-winning hospital drama “The Pitt.” This week’s streaming offerings, selected by Associated Press entertainment journalists, also include the return of “The Night Manager” after nearly a decade.

— The public will be able to re-enter the grid when “Tron: Ares” releases on Disney+ on Wednesday. The third film in the franchise stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith and features the return of Jeff Bridges. The 1982 original starred Bridges as a hacker transported into a dangerous digital world and launched the cult franchise with cutting-edge computer graphics and special effects. AP reviewer Mark Kennedy praised Leto and Lee’s performances and said that although it was a “too biting” film, it was worth seeing. A bonus for music fans? The Nine Inch Nails soundtrack from the film with some returns to the original music from the film.

— Grammy-nominated artist Kid Laroi — a direct heir to Justin Bieber’s brilliant R&Pop inspired by B – will release his second album, “Before I Forget” on Friday. Judging from previously released singles, listeners can expect slow breakup musings (“A Perfect World”) and heavy, hi-hat tracks with loving lyrics (“A Cold Play”). It’s frictionless listening to start the new year.

— In what counts as a quick turnaround these days in the world of prestige television, “The Pitt” returns for its second season and its second day in the life of a frantic Pittsburgh emergency room run by Noah Wyle’s beleaguered and beloved Dr. Robby. The first episode of season 2 premieres Thursday on HBO Max at 9 p.m. Eastern. Expectations will be much higher this time around. In the 10 months since Season 1 ended, “The Pitt” has won the Emmy for best drama along with four others, including best actor for Wyle and supporting actress for Katherine LaNasa, who will return despite her character swearing off after being punched. Ten months have also passed in the world of the series, which will once again follow a single emergency crew, this time over a Fourth of July weekend.

— After a much longer absence, “The Night Manager” will return for a second season. It’s been nearly a decade since Tom Hiddleston’s hotel clerk-turned-spy tracked down a dirty arms dealer in the show based on a John le Carré novel. It was a limited series for the BBC and AMC, but its creators are now bringing it back with a new and original story. This time it will air on Prime Video in the United States, starting with three episodes on Sunday.
