Google TV’s big Gemini update adds image and video generation, voice control for settings

It can be a fun distraction, but it’s not an essential TV experience. Google’s image and video templates are good enough that you can benefit from using them on a larger screen, but Gemini is also available for more general tasks.

This update brings a complete chatbot-like experience to TVs. If you want to track sports scores or get recommendations on what to watch, you can ask the robot. Results may be a little different than what you expect when using Gemini on the web or in an app. Google says it has designed a “visually rich framework” that will make AI more usable on a TV. There will also be a “Dive Deeper” option in each answer to generate an interactive overview of the topic.
Gemini may also take steps to change system settings based on your complaints. For example, bring up Gemini and say “the dialog is too quiet” and watch the AI make adjustments to resolve this issue.

The new Gemini features will debut on TCL TVs that run Google TV, but most other devices, even Google’s TV Streamer, will have to wait a few months. Even then, you won’t see Gemini taking over every TV or streaming box with Google’s software. New Gemini features require the full Google TV experience with Android OS version 14 or higher.
