The Pitt season 2 won’t be the popular HBO Max show’s final entry as HBO officially announces its third season

The Pitt The crew is gearing up for another shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center after the hit medical drama was renewed for a third season.
Less than 24 hours before The Pitt Season 2 debuts today (January 8), with HBO boss Casey Bloys confirming the multi-award-winning series will return for another episode. Bloys made the announcement during this season’s world premiere in Los Angeles on January 7.
There’s no news on how much script work has been completed, when cameras might start rolling and – naturally – when The Pitt season 3 will be released. It’s safe to assume, however, that Noah Wyle and the rest of the hit HBO Max TV Original cast will return.

An HBO Max show on the run with a clean bill of health
It’s not a big surprise to see this The Pitt season 3 has been given the green light.
The procedural drama has had an eventful year since its first season landed on one of the world’s top streaming services last January. At the time, its first season not only received rave reviews upon release – it still holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (RT) – but each of its 15 episodes ended up averaging 10 million views (per Variety) and achieved 13 consecutive weeks of growth before its finale. Ahead of the Season 2 premiere, The Pitt’s final chapter also boasts an even better RT score of 97% among critics.
Interest in the show increased following The Pittto multiple awards won at the 2025 Primetime Emmys and during the first weeks of the 2026 awards season.
Indeed, in recent months the program created by R. Scott Gemmill has – at the time of publication – won 19 gongs. These include prestigious and ultra-competitive awards like Outstanding Drama Series at last year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year at the 2026 Television Critics Association Awards, and Best Drama Series at this year’s Critics Choice Awards.
We don’t know how long a show lasts The Pitt will have it, so it remains to be seen if season 3 will be its final entry. However, at present, HBO is clearly thrilled with its popularity, so it was always a question of when, not if, a third season would be announced.
