Two people wounded in shooting involving federal agents in Portland

Two people were shot and injured during an incident involving US federal agents in the city of Portland, Oregon, according to local police.
“Officers determined that the two individuals were injured during a shooting involving federal agents,” Portland police said in a statement, adding that a man and a woman were taken to the hospital and their conditions were unknown.
The circumstances of the shooting are currently unknown.
The incident comes a day after a federal agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sparking protests across the United States against federal law enforcement operations in major American cities.
Portland police said in a statement that their officers were not involved in the incident and were called after receiving reports that a man had been shot.
The two people who were shot have not been identified and police say they were found several blocks from the scene of the shooting.
“The police applied a tourniquet to them and called emergency medical personnel,” before they were transported to hospital, the statement said, adding that “their condition is unknown.”
“We are in the early stages of this incident,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said.
“We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling following the shooting in Minneapolis, but I ask the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson also released a statement, saying the shooting comes “just one day after the horrific violence committed in Minnesota by federal agents.”
He added that immigration officials should “cease all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be conducted.”
“Federal militarization undermines effective, community-based public safety and runs counter to the values that define our region,” he said.
Portland has been the site of large anti-Trump protests in the past.
Portland police arrested a protester on threatening charges Wednesday evening after officers found him threatening another person with a knife.
