The new year is here, which means you’re getting closer to the movies, shows, and documentaries scheduled to stream. Netflix has a slew of exciting titles scheduled for release in 2026 and is kicking off its run with a promising winter slate.

From stunning animated films to high-stakes crime thrillers, there are titles for every nuance on your watchlist. Here are some of the best movies released on Netflix in January and what they bring to your screen.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya!

Starting this year’s foreign film releases off on a good foot is one of the most interesting anime titles that Netflix has announced for 2026. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is an original Japanese animated fantasy musical that brings the vibrancy of contemporary music and art to a nostalgic story. The film, a reimagining of the popular tale The Story of the Bamboo Cutter, follows Iroha, a teenager who discovers a baby growing from a telephone pole. While raising the child, Iroha discovers her true identity as Kaguya, a princess of the moon. As Kaguya quickly grows up, the two girls form a singer-songwriter duo as mysterious forces lurk and attempt to bring Kaguya back to the moon.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! features visually stunning animation and character design, as well as a solid soundtrack featuring works from prominent producers in the Vocaloid scene.

The big fake

Netflix’s collection of crime thrillers continues to grow with exciting titles every month, the most recent being The big fake. Set in 1970s Rome, this story is inspired by the true story of Toni Chichiarelli, a talented artist and art forger.

The Italian thriller follows Toni, an artist with big dreams, whose life is intertwined with gangs and conspiracies due to his talent as a forger. From paintings to passports, Toni progresses to become a master forger, his big dreams and greed drawing him closer to Rome’s criminal underworld.

Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart

I love my fair share of Netflix true crime docufilms, and this is one I’ve been waiting for since it was announced late last year. Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart tells the true story of the kidnapping of Elizabeth, who was taken from her bedroom in Utah in 2002 when she was a young teenager, sparking what remains one of the most discussed missing persons cases in the United States. With little evidence except a young witness, investigators embark on a rescue mission that lasts more than nine months, involving community efforts and confusing suspects.

This gripping documentary brings you in-depth coverage of what happened, with first-hand accounts from Elizabeth herself, as well as exclusive interviews with her family, investigators and those closest to the case.

People we meet on vacation

For the romance section of your Netflix watchlist for the month, be sure to add The people we meet on vacation. Based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Emily Henry, this love story follows free-spirited Poppy (That of my Lady Jane Emily Bader) and the man with a plan, Alex (The Ballad of Serpents and Songbirds‘ Tom Blythe), two opposites who become best friends in college and make a pact to vacation together every summer for a week, no matter where they are in the world.

Over time, their friendship evolves into something more complex as they find themselves developing feelings, leading to tension and anxiety that spills over into their summer travels.

The tear

If you’re up for a fast-paced film that will keep you engaged throughout its running time, don’t miss The tearan action thriller led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The story follows two Miami cops and partners, who find themselves in a tense situation after their team finds over $20 million in cash hidden in a safe house. The team must survive the night without being surprised by outside forces, but internal tensions begin to brew as confidence is thrown out the window in the face of fortune.

The tear also features performances by Steven Yeun (Beef), Teyana Taylor (One battle after another), Sasha Calle (The lightning) and Kyle Chandler (Line).
