Why it matters
A class I risk classification represents “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use or exposure to a violating product will result in serious unfavorable consequences for health or death”, according to the FDA.
Listeria infection, or listeriosis, can cause a range of symptoms in infected individuals. For those who experience less serious infections, symptoms may include fever, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which often last between one and three days, FDA said.
For more serious and potentially potentially deadly infections, symptoms may include headache, steep neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
Serious infections are particularly dangerous for young children, fragile people or the elderly, and those including the weakened immune system. This can also lead to false layers and mortinities in pregnant women.

What people say
Face Rock Creamery LLC said in a press release from the FDA reminder notice: “Face Rock Creamery undertakes to ensure the safety and quality of our products and works in close collaboration with our distribution partners and our regulatory agencies to resolve the question quickly and thoroughly. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the confidence that our customers grant us.”
Haley F. Oliver, professor of food sciences at Purdue University, said Nowsweek previously: “Listeria monocytogenes is a common microorganism that can be found in the natural environment, for example in the soil. There are many factors that determine if someone gets listeriosis – listeria infection. In most cases, an immunocompromised person – so young, old, pregnant or otherwise immunocompromised – must eat contaminated foods. The number of bacteria resulting in infection and time before the disease varies considerably. Symptoms vary between people but may include fever, pseudo-grapple symptoms, headache, steep neck, confusion and loss of balance. “”
Mary O’Riordan, professor of microbiology and immunology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Michigan, previously said Nowsweek: “Listeria has an unusual ability to develop at refrigerated temperatures. Although the bacteria can contaminate many types of food, cheeses or cold cuts that are kept in cold storage for long periods in stores or at home are a place where Listeria can continue to grow.
“The first symptoms of Listeria infection resemble other food origin infections, including fever, diarrhea and vomiting, so that it is often not diagnosed right away. Unfortunately, listeria can sometimes spread in the brain and cause more serious illnesses, like meningitis. In these cases, if people experience headaches, stiff neck or confusion, they must seek subsequent care. ” “”
The FDA said on its website: “Pregnant women and their baby to be born or newborn, adults over 65, and those who have a weakened immune system, are all considered as high-risk groups likely to the serious and negative effects of listeriosis.”
