U.S. Hits ISIS Targets in New Syria Strike Amid Ongoing Threats – RedState

On Saturday, we learned that the United States had again struck suspected ISIS forces in Syria in an airstrike. This is the second such strike in as many months.

The US military has launched airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, US officials confirmed to Fox News.

This is the second time the U.S. military has struck Islamic State targets in Syria since Dec. 19, after two Iowa National Guard soldiers and their American interpreter were killed by an ISIS sniper.

There have been no reports of U.S. military personnel injured or killed in Syria since the attack on December 19, 2025. This second strike is likely a sequel.

Meanwhile, talks are taking place between the United States and Syria:

The strikes come as the US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, said he had met with the new Syrian leaders in Damascus to discuss the country’s future. “Today, on behalf of President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, I met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and members of their team in Damascus,” Barrack wrote.

The ambassador’s post X is long, but this passage stands out:

President Trump recognizes this moment as a crucial opportunity for a new Syria – a unified nation in which all communities, including Arabs, Kurds, Druze, Christians, Alawites, Turkmen, Assyrians and others, are treated with respect and dignity and enjoy meaningful participation in institutions of governance and security. Recognizing this opportunity, he agreed to lift sanctions in order to “give Syria a chance” to move forward.

A unified nation, with what seems to be a certain freedom of conscience; it would be something new in Syria and, for that matter, in the Middle East as a whole. Muslim-majority nations have a bad reputation for being the opposite of inclusive. A certain skepticism is necessary here.

While it is always worth taking out a few ISIS goblins and thereby proving the old adage that any problem can be solved by the appropriate use of high explosives, we must remember that, new regime or not, this is a very, very unstable region of the world. Of course, the United States has the advantage in this situation of uncontested air superiority and precision stand-off weapons; the new Syrian government has no such luxury and appears to be on a knife edge. Providing Syria with modern weapons also does not seem to be the best idea. They may pose as a US ally, or at least not an enemy, at present – but we should remember the lesson of supporting the Afghans. mujahideen during the Soviet invasion, and how well it worked.

In this part of the world, today’s friend is too often tomorrow’s enemy.

Yet some ISIS fighters have now been removed from the board. There’s nothing wrong with that.
