Can philanthropy fast-track a flagship telescope?

New Space is a term now commonly used in the rocket and satellite industries to refer to a new model of speed-driven development, one that draws on the Silicon Valley mentality of “move fast and (hopefully not) break things.” Given that many of the founders of rocket and satellite companies have come from Silicon Valley, this probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, but this mindset has led to an exponential growth in the number of satellites in orbit, as well as an exponential decrease in the cost of putting them into orbit.
