Kings spoil Kane’s history-making night with road victory over Red Wings

Patrick Kane’s historic night was spoiled by the Los Angeles Kings as they beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena. It was Los Angeles’ third straight victory, improving the club to 22-16-3, while their 14-6-6 away record is third best in the Western Conference.
Kane, who scored his 1,374th point assisting Alex DeBrincat’s goal, tied Mike Modano for the most points scored by an American-born player in NHL history. DeBrincat’s score was Detroit’s only one of the night, coming in the final minutes of regulation to avoid a shutout.

Neither team was able to find the scoreboard in the first period, with Samuel Helenius using his second goal of the season to put the Kings up 1-0 midway through the second. Jeff Malott got the assist after coming away with the puck in a scrum and finding Helenius for a direct shot.
Anton Forsberg continued what was a dominant overall performance, keeping Detroit off the scoreboard for the first 40 minutes of regulation. He finished with 27 saves, securing his third win in the last four and improving his record to 9-6-4.
Andrei Kuzmenko extended Los Angeles’ lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:46 of the final period, scoring his 11th score of the season. Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala had assists as the Kings contributed to their 24th NHL score with the man advantage.
With Detroit desperate for the tying score late in the third, Corey Perry iced the game with an empty-net goal to make it 3-1. He extended his point streak to five straight games after tying Mike Gartner for the 34th most games played in league history (1,432) with his first appearance Tuesday.

Coming a day after their game in Columbus against the Blue Jackets was postponed due to weather, the victory moves Los Angeles back to fourth in the Pacific Division. The season series between the Kings and Red Wings is now officially over, with each team winning a game on the other’s ice.
Looking to extend the winning streak to four, Los Angeles will travel to Buffalo and face the Sabers on Thursday afternoon. Buffalo, currently on its own four-game winning streak, is just four points behind Detroit in the Atlantic Division.
Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT.
