Mumbai residents relax on Arabian Sea promenade : NPR
Far-Flung Postcards is a weekly series in which NPR’s international team shares moments from their lives and work around the world.
Mumbai is a city of more than 18 million people crammed onto a tiny peninsula, and so residents take their respite wherever they can get it.
This is often the case on promenades, such as Carter Road, which border the Arabian Sea.
Recently, I joined what felt like the rest of Mumbai to enjoy the late afternoon breeze.
While walking, I saw this gentleman reading his newspaper. A worker took a nap. A mother was pushing a pram. A housekeeper was walking a small, expensive dog. A couple huddles in a corner. A woman wearing a veil lifted it to take a photo with another young woman. A musician sang out of tune in front of an audience that included a stumbling drunk man.
The people of Mumbai deserve more space than what the municipality is giving them. And yet, watching Mumbai life unfold on a narrow promenade is one of this city’s quiet delights.
