iPhone Fold Could Redefine Battery Life and Shake Up Button Design
Apple’s long-awaited iPhone Fold could pack a massive battery and bold design changes, according to new rumors on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo. Leakers with mixed but established backgrounds shared the details, which 9to5Mac reported on Monday.
An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The biggest iPhone battery yet
According to the latest report, Apple is testing a 5,500mAh battery for the iPhone Fold. If accurate, that would make it by far the largest battery ever used in an iPhone. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to come with a 5,088 mAh cell, already the largest battery Apple has put in a non-foldable iPhone.
The increase in capacity makes sense given the demands of a foldable design, which typically requires more power to drive a larger internal display. It also suggests that Apple might prioritize battery life as a key selling point, an area where early foldables from other manufacturers often struggled.
Buttons, cameras and other design changes
Separate leaks point to additional hardware changes, including more visible volume buttons positioned toward the top of the device. This change could improve usability when you unfold the phone, where traditional button placement can feel awkward.
The same report references updated camera hardware and improvements to the hinge and chassis, although specific details remain vague. Taken together, the changes suggest that Apple continues to iterate on ergonomics and durability – two areas where foldable phones receive the most scrutiny.
Although Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge the iPhone Fold, the growing volume of leaks suggests development is well underway. If these rumors are confirmed, Apple’s first foldable could arrive with fewer compromises than previous entries in the category.
