Indirect nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, mediated by Oman, have been “very good,” according to President Donald Trump.

“Iran seems to really want to make a deal. We’ll have to see what that deal will be. But I think Iran seems to really want to make a deal, as they should. Last time they may have decided not to do it, but I think they probably feel differently,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday.

The president added that the United States has a “great Armada” heading toward Iran, something he has spoken about in the past.

When asked how long the United States would be willing to wait to reach a deal with Iran, the president showed some flexibility, saying he believed the two countries could reach an agreement.

“It can be achieved. Well, we have to put ourselves in position. We have plenty of time. If you remember Venezuela, we waited a while and we are in no hurry. We have very good [talks] with Iran,” Trump said.

“They know the consequences if they don’t reach an agreement. The consequences are very serious. So we’ll see what happens. But they had a very good meeting with a very senior representative of Iran,” the president added.

U.S. and Iranian officials held separate meetings with Omani officials on Friday, amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Oman’s foreign ministry said the meetings were “focused on preparing appropriate conditions for the resumption of diplomatic and technical negotiations.”

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the indirect nuclear negotiations were “a good start” and that there was a “consensus” on continuing the negotiations.

“After a long period without dialogue, our views were expressed and our concerns were expressed. Our interests, the rights of the Iranian people and all issues that needed to be expressed were presented in a very positive atmosphere and the other side’s views were also heard.” Araghchi said.

“It was a good start, but its continuation depends on consultations in our respective capitals and the decision on how to proceed,” he added.

While both sides expressed optimism about a possible deal, the United States decided to impose new sanctions on Iran after the negotiations. The State Department announced that the United States was sanctioning “15 entities, two individuals, and 14 Shadow Fleet vessels linked to the illicit trade in Iranian oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals.”

“Instead of investing in the well-being of its own population and in crumbling infrastructure, the Iranian regime continues to finance destabilizing activities around the world and intensify its repression inside Iran,” the statement added.

“As long as the Iranian regime attempts to evade sanctions and generate oil and petrochemical revenues to finance such oppressive behavior and support terrorist activities and their proxies, the United States will act to hold the Iranian regime and its partners accountable.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital on the sanctions.
