The family vacation turned into a five-year nightmare. And it all started with just one payment.

L. Williams found a cruise consultant online who booked her family for a week on Carnival Freedom. Very good price. A catch. He only accepted Zelle. She sent $3,556. The family sailed in the Western Caribbean. Magnificent sunsets. Wonderful memories.

Five years later, she tried to book another cruise. No.

Carnival told her she was on the Do Not Sail list. It turns out her “consultant” pocketed Zelle’s money, then used a stolen credit card to book the trip. When the real cardholder disputed the charges, Williams was blamed.

She now owes $3,556 for a trip she already paid for. Banned for life. The scammer’s phone? Disconnected. (Of course.)

The offers are real right now

Here’s what you need to know. The cheapest window for domestic flights during spring break is approximately 43 days before departure. For trips at the end of March, it’s this week. Wait until the end of February and prices jump 20-25%. It’s your money that’s going out.

Fly Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday and save up to 30% on weekend flights. Set Google Flights alerts now. Caribbean fares are down 17% from last year.

Bundle flights with hotels through Costco, Expedia, or Delta Vacations, and you can reduce the total by hundreds of dollars.

Scammers spin like sharks

Williams’ story is not unique. More than 38 million people are expected to take a cruise in 2026, and scammers know it. Here are the big drawbacks I see.

  • The Google trap. Fake cruise line phone numbers appear in search results. A man called what he thought was Carnival customer service and was charged a “docking fee” of $650 per person. It’s not a thing. Real cruise lines don’t charge surprise fees over the phone. Always go directly to the official website for contact details.
  • The free cruise postcard. Do you have one in the mail? Throw it away. The fine print buries you in hundreds of dollars in hidden fees and a windowless cabin with bunk beds. How romantic. An investigation found that the company behind these changes changes its name every year, so you can’t search for them.

AI JOBS THAT PAY $200,000 OR MORE

  • The Facebook Agent. Scammers pose as travel agents in Facebook groups and collect payments through Zelle, Venmo or Cash App. Then they disappear. These apps have no buyer protection. They’re for sending money to people you trust, not strangers selling Caribbean getaways.
  • Your three rules: Always pay with a credit card. Never call a customer service number from a Google search, go to the official website. If you want a travel agent, check them out on ASTA.org.

Book smart and you’ll be sipping something tropical in a few weeks. Book carelessly and you could end up on the Do Not Sail list, which, ironically, is the worst kind of cruise control.

If someone you know is booking a trip for spring breaksend them this first. It takes two seconds to move forward and could save them thousands of dollars. A payment to the wrong person cost a woman her vacation money, cruise privileges and years of debt problems.
