BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday called for maintaining law and order “at all costs” and sought cooperation from all to build a safe and humane Bangladesh.

Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a landslide victory with a majority of more than two-thirds in historic parliamentary elections on Friday. The BNP leader is set to become prime minister for the first time. He will replace interim head of government Muhammad Yunus.

Addressing a press conference a day after the landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, Rahman said: “We need everyone’s cooperation to build a secure and humane Bangladesh. This time, everyone must play a responsible role in the reconstruction of the country. “No injustice can be done to anyone under any pretext. Law and order must be maintained at all costs,” Rahman was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune.

Rahman said the freedom-loving people of the country had made the BNP victorious, describing the result as “people’s victory”. “From today, everyone is free. Congratulations to all. With everyone’s participation, the journey towards a fascism-free state has begun in the country,” the BNP president said.

“Everyone’s thoughts are important in building the country. We will build the country based on everyone’s opinions,” he said.

The 13th parliamentary elections took on particular significance as they came after a period of tumultuous political vacuum, instability and fragile security situation, including widespread attacks on minorities after student-led protests that brought down Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule in August 2024.

According to the Election Commission (EC), the BNP won 209 seats out of 297, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami party won 68 seats. Hasina’s Awami League party was not allowed to participate in the elections, which recorded a turnout of 59.44 percent.

The EC postponed the announcement of results for two seats – Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 while the election for one seat was postponed due to the death of a candidate.
