Here’s a look at the medal count as competition heats up in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the two host cities for the 2026 Winter Olympics in northern Italy.

Alex Hall won silver in freestyle skiing, while Jackie Wiles and Paula Moltzan won bronze in the team downhill event. The U.S. team had a chance for gold in mixed doubles curling, but fell short against Sweden and will walk away with silver.

In speed skating, Stolz won his second gold medal and sets his second Olympic record of these Games when he won the 500 meters. He is the first American since 1980 to win multiple gold medals in speed skating.
Historical medal for South America
Brazilian skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, with a powerful final in Olympic giant slalom, won gold and won South America’s first ever Winter Games medal.
Pinheiro Braathen, from a family where his mother is Brazilian and his father Norwegian, represented Norway until 2023 when he abruptly retired. He returned to the sport in 2024, representing Brazil and has since achieved many “firsts” with his new country: the first Brazilian Alpine rider to finish on a World Cup podium last year and the first ever World Cup victory for the country this season.
What was the medal count for the 2022 Winter Olympics?
At 2022 Winter GamesNorway won the most medals, with 37 in total, including 16 gold.
Next came the ROC, the Russian Olympic Committee team, with a total of 32, followed by Germany with 27 and Canada with 26.
The U.S. team placed fifth with 25 medals – nine gold, nine silver and seven bronze.
Who has the most Olympic medals of all time?
Although the International Olympic Committee does not establish rankings, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage keeps a tally of medals. It counts a medal for first, second or third place in an event, regardless of the number of athletes on a team.
In the total medal tally from all previous Summer and Winter Games, the United States leads with 3,103 medals.
The United States is followed in terms of medal count by the former Soviet Union, which won 1,204 medals before its breakup in 1991. Germany comes in third with 1,091 medals.
The United States has also won the most gold medals, with 1,220, according to the Olympic Foundation.
But when it comes to Winter Olympics history alone, the United States falls to second place in medal count behind Norway, a perennial winter sports power.
Norwegian athletes have won a total of 404 medals in previous Winter Games. The United States has already won 330, while Germany is in third place with 286.
