Research shows this tiny detail in your booking can spell a huge difference in the cost of the flight

As a New Yorker, I lucky to have three nearby airports to choose from when booking a flight. I generally choose my flights based on timing and schedule: Where will I get a nonstop flight on my preferred airline? Where will I find flight times that work well with my schedule? And, of course, to which airport will getting there be the cheapest rideshare right and the easiest trip?
These are all crucial factors, but there’s another big one that is impacting a lot of airport choices, and it’s going to also spell a huge difference in the cost of your trip.
A recent Savings.com report compared various U.S. airports and their average domestic airfare on popular routes, and one factor came immediately into focus: How much these flights cost is going to depend on the airport someone chooses as their starting point.
The report looked at 200 busy airports and compared their prices across various routes and airlines in 2025, and it came across some interesting data. For example, Washington Dulles International Airport came out as among the most expensive airports in the country, with Salt Lake City International Airport not far behind.
As for affordable airports where you can score a great deal, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport was a winner, as was Orlando International Airport not far behind. As these are both popular vacation destinations, that’s really interesting, personally! Surprisingly, another very popular spot: Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, was also ranked as one of the country’s least expensive major airports.
So, if you are looking for a way to save some cash with your next flight, take this as a reminder to compare the prices at nearby airports. If you have various airports that are all within commuting range of your home, compare prices. It could save you hundreds, if not more.
Also remember to be flexible with your travel date. Sometimes leaving a day earlier or later can lead to much lower fares for you and your family.
