A man has died after triggering an avalanche while skiing in the Allgäu Alps in southern Germany, police said Monday.

The 46-year-old man, who was traveling alone, is believed to have triggered the avalanche on the north side of Iseler Mountain on Monday afternoon before calling emergency services, police said.

Bad weather and low visibility initially prevented a helicopter from reaching the site. A mountain rescue team climbed on foot to the crash site, but unstable snow conditions significantly hampered access and delayed rescue efforts, according to police.

The man was eventually found in a steep snowfield beneath the mountain’s north face. He was airlifted to hospital while being revived, but later died.

Police said the avalanche occurred outside the secure ski area, which was not threatened.

“In light of the current avalanche situation, people are strongly advised to follow official avalanche bulletins, wear appropriate safety equipment and avoid steep and high-risk terrain,” police said.
