Buenos Aires–based Sinergium Biotech begins preclinical testing of an innovative mRNA vaccine technology that could increase regional pandemic preparedness and contain escalating disease outbreaks in their tracks. The flexible platform is among the first mRNA vaccine technologies to be assessed in South America. It uses H5N1 avian flu as a prototype pathogen but can also target other emerging viruses. The project is backed by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization.
Denmark’s BioInnovation Institute receives up to $861 million over the next 10 years from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to expand its activities in supporting startup companies and entrepreneurs. The funding expands the BioInnovation Institute’s focus into fields like AI and quantum computing while retaining its main support for life science startups.
