Bill Maher and musician John Mellencamp discussed Monday how wealthy liberal celebrities are out of touch with everyday American workers.

On his “Club Random” podcast, Maher said that while he ultimately finds Democrats “less alarming” than Republicans, he takes issue with their far-left excesses and sometimes tone-deaf messages. “But yeah, I think both sides need to be called out. And, living in Hollywood, this town just doesn’t believe in that. They don’t believe in calling out both sides.”

Mellencamp recalled Maher’s recent statement rejecting the idea of using the Golden Globes as an opportunity to make political statements by wearing pins honoring Renee Good, a Minneapolis resident who was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Various celebrities, including actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Wanda Sykes, wore pins reading “Be Good,” in reference to Renee Good, while others used the television platform to make political statements.

Maher, however, laughed and dismissed the idea, angering celebrities to the point that Sykes took a jab at him while he was accepting the award for best performance in a stand-up comedy on television, telling him: “You give us so much. But I wish it were a little less. Just try less.”

“It was so funny,” Maher said, remembering his first reaction that sparked so much outrage.

“It was,” Mellencamp admitted. “Because outside of this group of people who live here, no one gives a shit.”

“But that’s what I said,” Maher recalled. “The Democrats, I mean – for people who haven’t seen it – the whole point was you have to give free rein to your celebrities. You think they’re helping, and actually they’re hurting, because people don’t see celebrities as if they can relate to their lives, and there’s no way they can.”

“The other funny thing is, you know, most people, you know… We don’t know anything. You know, we don’t know anything,” Mellencamp said. “We don’t know what’s really going on. We don’t know, you know, and it’s always been like that for as long as I can remember.”
