Los Angeles is finally expanding its mass transit system to the bustling streets of Beverly Hills, announcing Thursday that a 4-mile extension of the D subway line will open on May 8.

Transit enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the new subway expansion have long made jokes on Reddit and X about wanting to “take the D.” Metro, the Los Angeles County transportation agency, doesn’t shy away from a quirky pun. The agency sells “Ride the D” t-shirts and crop tops on its online store.

Minimalist black tops are also a good deal. The Harvest is $20 (excluding tax and shipping) and the T is $21; both were still available Thursday evening.

Along with the jubilation over the long-awaited project — which has been in the works for decades and has two more westward extensions opening in 2027 and 2028 — there was plenty of astonishment when Metro adopted the cheeky slogan.

Metro responded directly to X riders from its @metrolosangeles account, relying fully on the Internet.

In 2007, Seattle welcomed a new trolley line with an equally sexual nickname – an acronym for South Lake Union Trolley.
