GOP Gov. Kevin Stitt Says Democrats Aren’t Trying To Turn Illegals Into Voters

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt suggested he doesn’t think Democrats support lax border security policies in an effort to get illegal immigrants to vote for the party.
The governor, known for his tenuous relationship with President Donald Trump, said that in his opinion Democrats’ intentions were not to include foreign nationals on the nation’s voter rolls, in an interview with NPR that aired Thursday. Oklahoma Republican colleagues are speaking out as the Senate considers the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, which would, in part, require proof of citizenship for voter registration, amid fierce opposition from Democratic lawmakers. “Even my fellow Democratic governors aren’t trying to lure illegals here to turn them into voters. I don’t believe that’s what Democratic politicians are trying to do,” Stitt told NPR.

“And just like Republicans have a bad reputation for saying people think they don’t like immigrants. That’s not true. There’s a common ground that if we sit down together, we can figure this out,” the governor added.
“Oklahoma is a leader in voter integrity to ensure secure elections. That includes requiring all voters to provide state-issued identification to do so and ensuring that only citizens register to vote,” a spokesperson for Stitt told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. “Governor Stitt remains committed to strong systems and encourages other states to follow suit. »
On February 11, Trump published two articles on Truth Social criticizing Stitt in which he called him “RINO,” a common abbreviation meaning “Republican in Name Only.”
“When Kevin Stitt, the very mediocre (at best!) RINO governor of Oklahoma, was losing his election to a Democrat, primarily because he had done a poor job, he called for my help,” Trump wrote in the second of his two messages. “I approved it and he won – Sorry, my dear Oklahoma, for doing this to you!”
The president won Oklahoma by 34 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, sweeping all 77 counties in the state. Stitt is term limited and cannot run again in November.
