Hegseth spits in the face not only of the UN, but also of any constraint or control of targets. He also seems to ignore the need to plan for the consequences of a gratuitous war, which makes America’s botched reconstruction of Iraq seem almost quaint. It is obvious that the lives he is referring to are not those of civilians in Iran or the rest of the region.
