PITCAIRN, Pa. — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say a teenager is lucky to be alive after trying a new “fire-breathing” challenge on social media involving isopropyl alcohol.

The Pitcairn teenager was intubated and treated for burns to his face and chest.

“Luckily, in this particular case, the building was not burned down,” said Al Hussey, Wilmerding Borough Fire Marshal. “But someone really got hurt and, you know, they’re going to have some life-changing injuries.”

Parents are encouraged to pay particular attention to what their children have access to in terms of household products.

“If they’re styling their hair with chemicals, if they’re taking isopropyl alcohol in the room or any type of nail polish remover. Obviously, watch your lighters and your matches and educate your kids,” Hussey said.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous cases of children being harmed after allegedly being inspired by online trends or stunts.

A 9-year-old Illinois child suffered third-degree burns when a toy he put in the microwave burst. A 7-year-old apparently trying to copy the same challenge ended up in a coma.

The toy company says it has worked with social media companies to remove videos showing misuse of the product.
