Microsoft May Finally Let You Remove Bloatware and Preinstalled Apps in Windows 11

One of my main complaints about Windows 11 is that it comes with Bloatware. Although there is no certainty as of Microsoft will stop or even limit the number of Bloatware applications included with Windows 11, they now offer a way to delete most of these applications during a new installation.

Each time you install Windows 11 on a system, you will find that many applications, such as notebooks, multimedia and Microsoft Edge, are already preinstalled. Microsoft offers these applications so that you can start using Windows immediately after installation, without having to go online to download tools for different tasks. However, not everyone is a fan of these preinstalled tools. In addition, among these applications, there are, like the paint application, that you will rarely find yourself using.

Although Microsoft offers the possibility of uninstalling most of these applications, and you can also execute PowerShell scripts to delete them, wouldn’t these applications be installed by default? You will soon be able to do it with the launch of Windows 11 25:2 hours later this year.

In the Windows 11:2 am update, which is currently available for Windows Insiders, Microsoft has introduced a new group strategy called “Delete Microsoft Store default packages”. The name of the policy is explicit – it allows you to delete preinstalled applications with Windows 11.

To access this group strategy, open the start menu, type Change group policy In the search bar and press Entrance. Then access computer configuration> Administration models> Windows components> Application package deployment> Delete Microsoft Store by system.

If you have installed the Windows 11 25H2 update but you still cannot see this group strategy, you can activate it using Vivetool. You must first download and install Vivetool on your Windows 11 computer. You will notice that some applications have a single asterisk next to their name, while a few others have a double asterisk. A single asterisk indicates that the application does not have a user interface, which means that you will not find a dedicated application on your computer. The double asterisk indicates that the application performs important operations on your computer. For example, you will find double asterisks next to Windows Media Player, which is responsible for the management of multimedia files. There is no harm in uninstalling these applications, but you should only do it when you have installed alternatives, such as VLC Media Player as an alternative to the Windows Media player.

Anyway, to uninstall the applications, you must select “activated” in the group strategy and check all the applications you want to delete. Then click on “Apply” then “OK”.

It turns out that the selected applications will not be uninstalled from your device; Instead, they simply will not come preinstalled on a new user profile that you create. So, in my case, if I create a new user profile on my computer, Microsoft Clipchamp, Microsoft to do and Windows Media Player will not be preinstalled on it.

Therefore, this group strategy will only help you if you are a director and you do not want certain applications to be available on a new user profile that you create for someone else.

The next warning of this group strategy is that it does not cover the application that a Windows user would really want to uninstall. Honestly, the first time I have heard of this change, I was delighted that ultimately, after so many requests, Microsoft would allow us to easily remove Microsoft Edge.

Unfortunately, however, Microsoft Edge is not listed among the applications in the strategy “Delete Microsoft Store by default system”. Perhaps when the functionality will be accessible to the public, Microsoft Edge will be added to the EU user list, as the EDGE uninstallation option is available in the EU thanks to the Digital Markets Act.

The final warning with group policy is the group policy itself. The group’s strategy publisher is exclusively accessible to Windows 11 Pro, education and company users. This means that Windows 11 users will not be able to take advantage of this new group policy.

The register changes

After using the group strategy, it will also make some modifications to the register of the new user account. To check these modifications, you must open the registry publisher and access:

Each application of the group strategy obtains its own sub-bed, using its family name of package, in the register editor. As mentioned above, you will only find a very limited number of applications in group policy, in particular only Microsoft Store applications. However, apart from these applications, Windows 11 also includes many third -party Bloatware applications, such as Spotify. It would have been better if these applications were also present in the list.

Interestingly, the group policy really works by checking the registry keys. This means that you can use PowerShell to add new applications to the group deletion list. The only thing you need to be aware of is the family name for the application you want to add to the list. For example, the family name for LinkedIn is 7EEE776C..
