Over the weekend, the United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran after nuclear and regional tensions escalated, and Iran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region. Unsurprisingly, the attacks sparked a torrent of responses from content creators on social media. But in the age of artificial intelligence, some of the videos and images they shared have been doctored by AI.

On Tuesday, Nikita Bier, head of product at X, said the platform would penalize creators in the company’s revenue sharing program if they shared AI-generated war content without disclosure. The earning program allows creators to earn income based on the popularity of their posts. Those who violate this new policy face a three-month suspension. Repeat offenders risk being permanently banned from the creator revenue sharing program.

As AI transforms many facets of technology and social media, it can be difficult to separate real reports from AI-generated fakes. According to a CNET investigation, only 44% of American adults can confidently distinguish fact from fiction images and videos encountered online.

“In war, it is essential that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that could mislead people,” Bier wrote on X.

Although Suspending only revenue-generating creators may hurt their wallets, but it does nothing to address the more serious dangers posed by the spread of misinformation about war.

A representative for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to Bier, X will detect violators through posts flagged by a community rating or through content containing metadata or other signals from generative AI tools.
