I learned a new word in 2026: Snowcrete. Maybe in other areas it’s just called winter, but weeks of impenetrable, polar vortex-hardened snow and sleet are not common in the mid-Atlantic. So it was more exciting than usual when things started to thaw and I was able to get back on a bike. However, I needed to do some reconnaissance to see how well they cleared the paths. And, as I navigated ice-fringed rail trails and plow-scarred streets, I appreciated the RST air fork and extra torque from the recently upgraded Velotric Summit 2 hybrid e-bike.

Another versatile option from a brand we’ve liked in the past, the Summit is an answer for riders who don’t want two bikes and don’t want to keep the one they have. It’s designed for the commuter who crosses the park, the weekend cyclist who considers off-road shortcuts a sport, the errand runner who wants to be able to carry groceries but also butt. The Summit 2’s big upgrade is power: a 750W internal rotor motor that peaks at 1,300W and develops 100Nm of torque, so wet pavement, packed dirt and surprise debris become options, not obstacles. Pair it with Kenda 27.5″ x 2.4″ puncture-resistant knobby MTB tires for traction and vibration damping and a muddy, slippery slope or rutted access road is less work and more work. The RST air suspension fork with 120mm of travel, adjustable rebound and lockout means it’s smooth over gravel but firmed up for efficiency on pavement. And the geometry remains suitable for daily travel with an adjustable stem.

The other improvement is stamina and intelligence. The battery reaches 801.6 Wh, supporting a claimed range of 95 miles (in ECO). This means your route can expand without turning into math and anxiety. And there are five levels of assistance (up to Class III at 28 mph) plus a throttle if you need to get there faster. A SHIMANO Cues 9-speed drivetrain (11-46 teeth) handles cadence changes without drama, and Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes add predictable stopping when the street is still winter. On the technical side, the 57lb Summit 2 brings SensorSwap (torque mode ↔ cadence mode), Smart Tuning which remembers your assistance setting preferences, and a fitness-focused Pulse mode which adjusts support based on heart rate data (via the included wristband or compatible Garmin/Apple devices). It’s weatherproof (IPX6 bike, IPX7 battery), safety certified (UL 2271 and UL 2849), fender compatible, and traffic-focused with an integrated front light as well as turn and brake lights. Additionally, it is trackable through Apple Find My and Android Find Hub. Because trail therapy is fun; losing a bike is not. And there’s a Galaxy Purple option, which is pretty much this Prince fan’s weakness.

Available in Regular (5’2″ – 5’10”)/Large (5’7″ – 6’5″) sizes, the Velotric Summit 2 is now on sale for $2,099.
