UN Ambassador Mike Waltz joined Kristen Welker Sunday morning on NBC News’ Meet the Press to discuss Operation Epic Fury.
Waltz spoke not only of the incredible successes of the operation in its first week, but also of the grim reality of the decades of conflict provoked by the Iranian regime that led to this moment.

Why we are fighting Iran
“Well, I’ll tell you: the military goals and achievements of a week are truly extraordinary, as the president actually laid out: Iran’s air force destroyed; Iran’s air defenses destroyed and almost completely degraded; its navy sunk – more than 40 ships parked on the ocean floor. And above all, their ability to produce these ballistic missiles and drones with which they terrorize Israel, their Gulf neighbors, which they supply to Russia and which they use against Ukraine, is also being seriously degraded.
“So the military, our great Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary Rubio and others, are laying out their case in terms of how we are going to protect the American people and eliminate this threat once and for all.
“Kristen, I can tell you, as a veteran, I cannot – it breaks my heart in so many ways that we have had to face this threat across the Middle East for 47 years. And I want to be clear: the Iranian regime started this war in 1979 under Jimmy Carter, and thank goodness for President Trump. He is taking the bold and decisive steps that so many of his predecessors failed to take to end it, and end once and for all this threat to the American people and our allies all.
Waltz rightly notes the critical context of the conflict and the toll it took on Americans – and particularly American soldiers – for nearly half a century.
