NYC subway service operational but some roads in NY and NJ remain closed after heavy rains

New York – The New York metro system was fully operational for the Tuesday morning journey, but some roads remained closed in New York and New Jersey sections after heavy rains swept northeast of the United States during the night, causing sudden floods.
Dozens of flights have been delayed or canceled at the region’s airports on Tuesday, including 159 cancellations in total at Newark Liberty airport, according to Flightaware data.
Most of the watches and warnings of the sudden floods had expired in certain parts of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania while the rain passed, but a state of emergency declared by Governor Phil Murphy remained in New Jersey, where video on social networks showed still partially flooded in certain parts of the State while the residents worked to clean.
Delays have been reported on part of the state’s suburbs line due to bad weather.
In New York, however, Janno Lieber, president and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, told ABC 7 in New York that there was now a full metro service, as well as the complete rail service of Long Island Railroad and Metro North Commuter after hundreds of people worked during the night to restore operations.
A video published on social networks seemed to show that water has floods in a Manhattan metro station, immersing the platform while passengers inside a train watch. Another photo seems to show passengers standing on the seats of a train to prevent water from starting to dip the ground.
Lieber said that the city’s sewer system was overwhelmed by rain and fell into the metro tunnels and stations. In several cases, he said, the safeguard “jumped a man hole”, creating the dramatic “geyser” seen in certain videos.
“What happened last night is something that is, you know, a reality in our system,” he said to the television channel, noting that the backup occurs when more than 1 3/4 inches of rain fall in an hour. “We worked with the city of New York to try to increase them the system’s capacity to these key locations.”
In a district flooded in North Plainfield, New Jersey, the authorities were investigating the reasons why a house caught fire and collapsed and if it was due to a possible explosion. This happened shortly after the family inside evacuated, the authorities said. No injury has been reported.
