Chocolate sales are growing faster among people using weight-loss drugs than among the rest of the population, according to a new report.
Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Sprüngli cited data contradicting predictions that GLP-1 drugs would reduce interest in sweets.
Semaglutide drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, mimic the natural hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), while tirzepatides (like Mounjaro and Zepbound) target both GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors.
WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS COULD IMPACT SEXUAL HEALTH IN UNEXPECTED WAYS
Even as consumers taking these drugs reduce their intake of high-calorie foods like pasta and pizza, they still seek indulgence, Chief Executive Officer Adalbert Lechner said at a recent news conference.

“They’re moving toward higher-end products,” Lechner said. “Less is more – small rewards with a moment of happiness rather than mindless snacking.”

An internal company study found that 15% of U.S. households use GLP-1 medications – and those households accounted for about 17.5% of chocolate sales in the data set. Lindt also reported that U.S. premium chocolate sales grew nearly 17% among GLP-1 users in 2025, compared to growth of about 6.5% among non-users.

“Consumers around the world continue to seek quality and moments of pleasure,” Lechner said in a press release.

However, a 2025 study by Cornell University and Numerator suggests a different trend. This report found that GLP-1 users reduced their spending on high-calorie snacks by around 10%, with “equally significant decreases” for sweets, baked goods and cookies.

“The main trend is a reduction in overall food purchases,” said Sylvia Hristakeva, assistant professor and co-author of the Cornell study. “Only a small number of categories are showing increases, and these are modest compared to the overall decline.”

Despite these findings, Lechner said he does not view the popularization of weight-loss drugs as a threat to business.

Analysts expected that the introduction of GLP-1 pills would have a negative impact on the food industry over the next few years.
Experts predict that oral versions of weight-loss drugs will expand the market to include more men and younger patients.
